The Many Forms Of Progess: The Story Of The Chinese Bamboo Tree

Life in 2020 is fast!
We have instant access to so much now – from information, games, food, music, books, alcohol, drugs – the list goes on!
We want are films instantly on Netflix, and still complain about lack of choice!
We buy our food fast via the drive-thru, and complain of the 2 minute wait!!
We pomp our horn at the car in front of us the very second the light goes green!!!
We expect problems to be resolved immediately, often finding the quick solution rather than having the patience to find the right solution.
We want, sorry – we demand, results immediately whether that’s from our team’s football manager, the company CEO, our child’s school teacher or the woman on the end of the phone at the call centre.
And the same applies to fitness – many want the convenience of the results without the inconvenience and time required to put in the hard work.
However, success and progress doesn’t generally work in ‘fast forward’ mode.
A great story to illustrate this is that of the Chinese Bamboo Tree…
When the Chinese Bamboo Tree is planted, watered, and nurtured for an entire growing season it doesn’t outwardly grow as much as a millimetre.
Then, after the second growing season, a season in which the farmer takes extra care to water, fertilise and treat the bamboo tree, the tree still hasn’t even sprouted.
This goes on as the sun rises and sets for four more years.
The farmer has nothing visible to show for all of his hard graft in trying to grow the tree.
Then, boom, it happens.
In the fifth year that Chinese bamboo tree seed finally sprouts and the bamboo tree grows up to eighty feet in just one growing season! Or does it!?
Did the little tree lie dormant for the 4 years only to grow exponentially in the fifth?
Or, was it growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to support its potential for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond?
The answer is, of course, very obvious. Had the tree not developed a strong unseen foundation it could not have sustained its life as it grew.
The same is true with fitness, although I’m not saying you will have to wait 5 years to see the progress.
Many people start training and give up when they don’t initially see those muscles sprouting through or that belly fat shrinking.
But your outward appearance doesn’t always tell the full story. The foundations for your fitness may be hidden but progress is being made.
Trust the process, do the right things and be patient.
As usual, any questions fire them over.
