The Amazing Benefits Of Being A Morning Exerciser… And How To Make It Happen!
Your morning routine is the pillar that gives shape to your day!
Conquer it and your day will, more often than not, go the way you want it to!
Likewise, if you let the morning drift along – with no plan, schedule or consideration – you open the door wide to the nasties that will ruin your day!
You know the things – procrastination, frustration, boredom, overwhelm, laziness and a feeling that you don’t have the time, energy or self-will to achieve the things you want to achieve!
Don’t despair – there is an answer, and this post is going to give you the “all singing, all dancing” blueprint to become a morning exerciser, conquer the morning and transform your life!
And how do I know this you are probably asking!?
Well, 10 years ago I’d stuck one of those big arsed labels to myself stating ‘I’m NOT a morning person!’
I stayed in bed until the very last minute…
I rushed, or missed, my brekkie…
I whinged about the awful traffic…
I pressed the snooze button like I was playing an Xbox shoot’em up game…
I started my day ‘on the back foot’!
And that ‘bad start’ often spreads to the rest of my day!
Whilst most people may believe they want to spend their mornings in bed, becoming a morning exerciser is a great way to schedule and maintain your training around a hectic or busy lifestyle.
There are also a number of other benefits which arise from working out in the mornings. Let’s explore some of the main ones before we delve into how to you can become a morning exerciser…..
1) Working Out In The Morning Improves Your Mental & Physical Energy:
Many people believe that by working out they will have less energy and be super tired all the time – but it is actually quite the opposite!
Exercising gives you the boost of a super strong jug of coffee, with none of the downsides!
Not only will it make you feel wide awake, but on top of having more energy after your workout, your mind will be ready and alert to take on the tasks of the day ahead!
2) When You Workout In The Morning It Enhances Your Metabolism:
Every bodily function results in some burned calories. However, after exercising your body burns more calories than pre exercise.
So, whether you are sat in traffic, stuck in a work meeting or having your breakfast, you are burning more calories than if you hadn’t performed a workout beforehand!
This is referred to as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumptions (EPOC), and studies have shown that as much as 200 calories extra can be burnt-off during the day by those who have performed exercise compared to those who have not!
3) You Will Hit Your Goals Quicker:
By committing to exercising in the morning you are subconsciously putting a high priority on your physical fitness.
And few people are satisfied getting up early each day to workout if they aren’t going to get the results they desire!
This brings the inner beast in you into play! It is a subconscious prompt which will push you to work harder, find new ways to support your exercise results, and help you commit to the process over the longer term, and ultimately create a fitness lifestyle for good!
4) It Will Improve Your Sleep:
Here’s another one that might not immediately seem logical – but it’s true! By waking up early in the morning to workout you will start to sleep better!
You see, your body will be in a state of healthy fatigue, prompting it to shut-down at bed-time, and see you enjoy regular good sleeping patterns.
5) It Installs Great Self-Discipline Inside Of You:
Without doubt, by waking up early to exercise on a daily basis will install a great amount of self-discipline.
It is a great feeling when you realise that each day you are instructing and controlling yourself to do what is good for you. There is no one telling you to do it, just you! It’s not a rule or a law, no one is going to arrest you or even criticise you if you don’t do it – BUT, you know it is right and you are the master of your destiny!
And, almost like magic, you will find that once you install self-discipline in one area of your life, you will see it start to take control over ALL aspects of your life!
6) The Above Benefits All Accumulate Into An Amazing Life:
Once you get your morning exercise routine nailed down, it will all begin to flow! Exercise provides a trigger to your body to release endorphin hormones! These promote happiness and will improve your mood in a positive way, much like how drugs, alcohol and other bad habits do in a negative way!
By creating a powerful habit of morning exercise – one where your metabolism is firing, your physique is looking and feeling better, your mindset is focused and clear and you are sleeping great each night – this is when and where it all falls into place and you realise this is what you NEED and WANT to do for life!
So, those are some of the main benefits that exercising in the morning can bring. Now let’s get cracking on how to turn you into a Morning Exerciser!
Firstly – I know becoming a morning exerciser can seem a daunting and difficult task at the outset.
However, by following a few simple steps your body and mind will adjust and training in the morning will feel like the most natural thing in the world!
Here are the steps……
Preparation is key to the morning exerciser. By preparing your training clothes, gym bag and refreshments the night before you are making a commitment to train.
Better still, if you are working out with a training partner, schedule a meeting time and place which must be kept to.
The morning exerciser must eliminate as many factors as possible which may lead to them thinking it is easier to stay in bed than to go and exercise.
And at the start you are going to need an alarm clock. But don’t have clock positioned next to your bed where you can turn it off whilst semi-sleeping!
NO – have that clock at the other side of the room where you need to get up and moving just to shut it up!
Mindset also plays a massive part in morning exercise. Never go to bed with the mindset of “I’ll see how I feel in the morning”.
The key is to go to sleep thinking “I will be working out in the morning no matter what!” A morning exerciser should also always have a positive spin on their training.
For example, if a mindset of ‘I’m not getting enough sleep’ is maintained then instinct will tell them to stay in bed longer.
Alternatively if thoughts such as ‘I won’t have to work-out after a long day at the office’ or ‘I get to spend more time with my family in the evening’ are actively encouraged, exercising in the morning will become an attractive option.
Variety should be incorporated into your morning exercises. Boredom will arise from doing any activity the same way day after day, and exercising in the morning is no different.
The morning exerciser must regularly change their workouts, set training goals, take part in fitness challenges and generally move things around.
Subtle changes such as adding a new playlist to your phone or changing your workout clothes can also have a short-term impact and add some variety. The key is to make a change immediately if you feel your training is going stale.
Diet is important to the morning exerciser. You will need to be fuelled for your work-out, but time is not on your side with regard to eating. Ideally aim to be eating fast-release carbohydrates as soon as you get up.
This will allow you to train shortly afterwards without feeling ‘bloated’ and with good energy levels. Again, preparation of what you intend to eat for breakfast should be conducted the night before.
Time to adapt is vital to the morning exerciser. The first week will be the most difficult, but stick at it and as the weeks go by you will be surprised at how natural your new get up time feels.
Habits are formed over time, not immediately. Build habits that benefit YOU!
As always, any questions fire them over.
