Mom & Dad Fitness – How To Stay Fit With Your Young Children & Babies

As a father of three I know how difficult it may seem to keep in great shape when you have young children or babies…

The lack of sleep, the never ending piles of washing, the house cleaning and so on often means exercise and keeping fit are really low down on your priority list!

Time really is at a premium, and exercise has lost its relegation battle!

However, like most things in life – it doesn’t have to be that way!

There are ways to work towards your fitness goals with your children, allowing you to be the ultimate multi-tasking parent.

“HOW??” I hear you ask – well, here goes…

1) GO OUT FOR A RUN:

The market is now awash with prams and pushchairs specifically aimed at joggers!

They are lightweight, have big wheels for off-roading and are great for speed!

They can be purchased in all sizes, from those aimed at new-born babies through to toddlers.

It’s a ‘win-win’ situation as you will benefit from the exercise and your child from the fresh air and excitement of racing around!

2) EXERCISE WITH YOUR BABY OR CHILD:

Whether you have a new-born baby, toddler or young child this is a great way of getting back into fitness.

Your child wants to be around you, wants to your attention…

You want to get fit and in shape…

Hey presto – COMBINE THE TWO!

Whilst safety should always be at the for-front of your mind, use your imagination to step things up!

  • Squat with your child in your arms
  • Press-up over them and give them a playful kiss each rep
  • Complete lunges with them close to your chest

And size is no matter!

Do more reps when they are babies, and less as they begin to get bigger.

3) HAVE AN ENERGETIC ADVENTURE:

Having children allows you to do the things and visit places you wouldn’t usually as an adult. Use this to your advantage!

It’s great to go back to having adventure and fun, especially when you can get some much needed exercise at the same time!

Most villages, towns and cities have parks with adventure playgrounds in them.

Join your child on the climbing frame, the monkey bars, the assault course and swings and give it your all!

Just make sure you don’t push any other kids out the way when your competitive edge kicks in!

4) MAKE EXERCISE AND SPORT A FAMILY THING:

As your children grow nurture a family habit of playing sport and exercising together!

Plan in regular sports, games and activities that the whole family can take part in.

It could be football or cricket in the back garden, runs and walks together, bike rides, swimming or a living room circuit class.

Again, use your imagination!

As Always, any questions fire them over.
