Quinoa is a grain crop grown in Peru, Chile and Ecuador primarily for its seeds.
There are many health benefits that this humble grain provides.
Below I will look at the main benefits and why you should make Quinoa a regular part of your diet!
1) IT’S PACKED WITH PROTEIN:
Quinoa contains complete protein, meaning that it contains all nine of the essential amino acids your body needs. It is vegetarian friendly and gluten free.
2) IT AIDS MUSCLE CONTRACTION:
Quinoa contains iron which helps to keep our red blood cells healthy! Iron also transports oxygen around the body, to fuel our muscle contraction.
3) IT HELPS DIGESTION:
Quinoa contains almost as much as twice the amount of fibre as other grains. This fibre content aids digestion and relieves constipation!
4) IT PROMOTES GROWTH AND REPAIR:
Quinoa also contains lysine.
This is an amino acid that is used to synthesise proteins.
This makes it is essential for tissue and muscle growth and repair!
5) IT ENCOURAGES STABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS:
Quinoa has a low glycaemic index (GI) meaning that energy is released into the bloodstream slowly.
The benefit of this is that blood sugar levels remain relatively stable.
Foods that have a high GI are thought to stimulate hunger and contribute to weight gain.
It should be noted that Quinoa contains a very dis-pleasurable coating, and should be thoroughly washed and drained.
